Poor Jason...this years birthday was probably not the best one. Nate was gone at scout camp all week (we missed him sooo much!) so it was just the three of us. This is one of those times when having a small family (and missing a member) feels sad. It certainly was not the same without Nate. Jason worked in the morning then Tyson and I were going to meet him for a lunch date but we had to take part in a very unexpected conference call that took up the afternoon. So we sat in the den eating Jimmy John's subs and chips while Tyson went to play at the Turley's.
After the conference call Jason got to spend some time with Tyson and we sang Jason Happy Birthday...it felt so wierd not having Nate! We picked up the babysitter (Tyson was so excited just to have a babysitter all to himself) and headed out to the Talking Stick Resort to eat at the Orange Sky restaurant where I had made reservations. Because I was trying to surprise Jason, I didn't tell him. He wanted to go there Father's Day weekend but we didn't make it so I thought this was a good chance to make it up to him. This restaurant has some great views and also private dining with your own very tall booth so no one can see you, and you have this great big window to look out of just the two of you. Very romantic...except one thing, I didn't know you had to "request" this special seating until we got there. I was so sad...not only that but it was cloudy that day and the curtains were closed at our window (they promised to open before the sun would set) and by the time the curtains opened the sun was gone...hiding in the clouds. :-) Just one of those things...we'll have to try again and next time I'll know!
Next we headed over to Gainey Ranch were we used to go a lot when we were dating just to walk around the resort. It is so pretty there and Jason originally first took me there because when I first moved to Arizona I had this fascination with palm trees. I LOVED them! This resort is filled with fabulous palm trees and I was immediately in love...with Jason and the palm trees. :-) This was where our first kiss was and where we got engaged. So I thought it would be fun to go back and walk around again...except for the fact that when we went to walk over to where our "first kiss" was it was all blocked off. Yes..completely gutted to be remodeled and never to be the same. My heart sank. That was such a special place to us! I will never forget standing on the sand at the resort (no beach here...just sand by the pool...but cool nonetheless) in front of these pillars of light where we had our first kiss. It was very romantic! Jason sure knows how to make things special! So, after walking around a little more we finally left to go home. Certainly I would never say the night was a bust because we were together but...I definitely had hopes of things going much differently than they did. :-)
The real party happened on Sunday though when we had our Nate dog back and then later that evening had all the family together and celebrated the July birthdays (Jason, John (Jason's dad) and Uncle Rob). Even though they are grown, they still take turns reading their cards out loud and opening their gifts. It's pretty cute.
Jason luckily is very easy to please, I think he would have been happy with Mcdonalds and renting a movie. Definitely being together is what counts. Happy Birthday my sweetness...onward and upward! :-)
